Fanciulla del West 1963Sadler's Wells Opera

Read more about the opera Girl of the Golden West

This Scottish tour, commencing Monday 18 February 1963, was unusual in that it consisted of a single week at the Glasgow Empire. The repertoire was as follows: Mon Carmen; Tue Cav & Pag; Wed Traviata; Thu Girl of the Golden West; Fri Carmen; Sat mat & eve Mikado.

The Girl of the Golden West was performed several times in Scotland in the years after its premiere. There was then a long gap until Sadler's Wells introduced the work to its repertoire and took it on tour. A single performance of this new production was given at the Glasgow Empire, which lacked an orchestra pit, as a result of which, even in a reduced touring version, the orchestra had a tendency to drown the voices.

Details of the 21 February cast are from a programme in the Mitchell Library.
