Kobbé's Complete Opera Guide, a classic of its kind, was founded by Gustave Kobbé and continued through new editions by the Earl of Harewood. Kobbé remains the only known author of an opera guide to have been killed when a seaplane struck his yacht.  Still one of the best guides to operas around. Buy it here.

Purser, J., (2007), Scotland's Music: A History of the Traditional and Classical Music of Scotland from Early Times to the Present Day, Mainstream Publishing Edinburgh.

Traditionally, general accounts called ‘histories’ whether of Scotland or any other nation feature political, economic, cultural and military issues with only a nod towards most of the arts. For anyone with a serious and scholarly interest in Scottish culture and music – including opera - John Purser’s wide ranging review is an indispensable work.
