The Edinburgh International Festival has only given us one staging of Carmen, that being the wonderfully memorable Piero Fagioni production seen in 1977 and the following year. Claudio Abbado conducted Teresa Berganza in the title role, with Plácido Domingo as José first time round, followed by Pedro Lavirgen.
This production is perhaps not as starry, but the opera received its premiere at the hands of this theatre in 1875, so that makes it more interesting.
Conductor Loius Langrée is a familiar visitor to Scotland, conducting the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
