High Society 2017Pitlochry Festival Theatre

Read more about the opera High Society

The large-scale musical chosen for the 2017 summer season was another Cole Porter classic, High Society.  The difference compared with Kiss Me, Kate was that High Society had started life in the cinema, not the theatre.  Its actual theatrical prototype, a wonderful comedy called The Philadelphia Story, had featured in the Pitlochry repertoire back in 2007.

Maintaining the theatre's traditional formula of 'Stay six days and see six plays', the repertoire for the 2017 summer season included, in addition to High Society, works by J M Barrie (Mary Rose);  Alan Bennett (People);  Alan Ayckbourn (Absurd Person Singular); Peter Barnes (The Ruling Class) and David Greig (Europe).

As with the 2016 production of Carousel, the band consisted entirely of musicians, with none of the fascinating hybrid actor-musicians that featured in the musical performances from 2009 to 2015.

The musicians were: Musical Director Jon Beales (Keyboards 1);  Stuart Watson (Keyboards 2);  Philip Alexander (Reeds/Woodwind);  Eoin Tonner (Trumpet/Flugelhorn);  Tom Smith (Trombone/ Euphonium); Pete Murch (Kit/Percussion);  Mark Wilson (Violin);  Mario Caribe (Double Bass).

High Society opened the summer season on Friday, 26 May and brought the final curtain down on Saturday, 14 October.  During that period there were 38 performances in total.
