A successful first British staging of this not entirely successful work. Sometimes the massed choruses made it seem more like an oratorio. But the director introduced as much movement as he could - hijack victims, including the Klinghoffers, being rounded up apparently from among the audience, and the cabin-bound Austrian Lady singing her solo from a stage box. The set was minimal - just the open space of the stage with a few sections of railing and suitably nautical superstructure. The performance of the orchestra and chorus under Edward Gardner provided plenty of drive.
