Count of Luxembourg 1912George Edwardes' Company

Read more about the opera Count of Luxembourg

The Count of Luxembourg enjoyed an early success, more than any Lehár piece since The Merry Widow. However its record on tour would be at least rivalled by Lehár's next operetta, Gypsy Love, over the next couple of seasons.

A four week long initial visit to the central belt in the late winter of 1912 began with a fortnight in Edinburgh before moving to Glasgow. For the return in the autumn the company went straight up to Aberdeen, returning south via Dundee to finish in Edinburgh again.

The cast for week commencing 12 February in Edinburgh is from a programme in the Weir Collection at the National Library of Scotland. Amendments to principal roles for the autumn tour are as reviewed in the Dundee Advertiser. Phyllys Le Grand played Angèle throughout both visits.

It is clear that the book by Basil Hood is an adaptation rather than a mere translation, and contains significant differences compared with the original.
