Having given a single performance of Adam's charming comedy in Edinburgh in December, the Carl Rosa company now let Glasgow hear it once. Such a small number of performances hardly shows much managerial confidence in the work.

They need not have worried. The Glasgow Herald critic's favourite moment was described thus: 'The climax of fun is reached when Chapelou encounters his wife in the dark, and, being addressed by her in both her characters, imagines he has to deal with two justly-enraged women, and appeals to each in turn with apology, and a wealth of shameless asseveration which only a Frenchman could be capable of. Played as it was admirably by Miss Esty and Mr Hedmondt, this scene brought down the house.'
