Aïda 1892Carl Rosa Opera Company

Read more about the opera Aïda

This was the first performance in Scotland of what would quickly become one of the most popular of Verdi's operas, and with Scottish soprano Effie Stewart in the title role. Leslie Crotty added two new roles on this tour, not just Amonasro, but also Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana.

However Crotty and his wife, Georgina Burns, soon left the company, and in the autumn began touring in their own group, performing Rossini's Cinderella, presumably deliberately chosen so as avoid direct competition with their former colleagues.
