Theatres - Royalty ''The Princess of Trebizonde''

'It is a long time since The Princess of Trebizonde was last presented in Glasgow.  The revival of the opera at the Royalty last night evidently suggested to many playgoers pleasant reminiscences, for the theatre was remarkably well filled, regard being had to the fact that we are now within measurable distance of mid-summer.

'The company responsible for the performance is organised by Mr Rollo Balmain, and includes, at least, two members who have long held a prominent place on the operatic stage.  These are Madame Constance Bellamy, who plays the part of the Prince, and Miss Carrie Braham, whose peculiar fitness for her original character of Manola surely nobody will dare to dispute.  Both ladies played last night with great spirit.  The latter contributed largely to the success of the comedy scenes, and the former had to accept more than one recall for her singing of the music falling to her lot.

'Miss Madge Rockingham also sang and acted well as Zanetta, and Miss Vance was sufficiently vivacious as Regina.  The showman, a part in which the late Mr Eldred excelled, was capably filled by Mr W Lonnen, who made a great deal of the eccentricities of the character, which, of course, has been written ''up to date.''  Other parts were also well sustained by Messrs Clifford Campbell, Charles usher,  Henry Royce,  and Wellesley Smith.

'There is a numerous and fairly competent chorus.  The incidental dances, of which there are several, were cleverly performed, a ballet in the last act being specially noteworthy.  The opera was finely staged, and Offenbach's tuneful music was on the whole creditably rendered.
