Meyerbeer's first outrageously successful Parisian grand opera was revived regularly through the nineteenth century, though it struggled to hold a place in the twentieth. Covent Garden and several other houses have given it a go in the twenty-first, though it seems unlikely ever to recover its initial popularity. Certainly the Carl Rosa didn't tour it again after this one season. But here the four difficult leading roles are cast with the company stars.
