Esmeralda 1886Carl Rosa Opera Company

Read more about the opera Esmeralda

The initial success of Esmeralda encouraged the company to revive it for a further tour very quickly, with several of the original cast, including Georgina Burns in the title role and her husband, Leslie Crotty, as the hunchback. A programme in the Edinburgh Room at Edinburgh City Library suggests Edward Scovel was to sing Phoebus, with McGuckin singing earlier in the day at the Carmen matinee. Another programme at NLS suggests a reversal of roles. In the absence of further data, at present we assume McGuckin sang Don José earlier in the week, then Phoebus, the part he created, on the Saturday evening, with Scovel singing in the Carmen matinee.

A programme in Edinburgh Central Library gives the cast for Saturday 6 November.
