Richard Charles Rodgers.

Born: New York, 28 June 1902.

Died: New York, 30 December 1979.

American composer.

Richard Rodgers was one of the dominant American composers of Broadway musicals for several decades in the middle of the twentieth century. He enjoyed successful partnerships with two lyricists, the first being the acerbically witty Lorenz Hart, with whom he produced works such as On Your Toes (1936), The Boys from Syracuse (1938), and Pal Joey (1940). After Hart's death, he teamed up with another old friend, Oscar Hammerstein II. They produced several excellent pieces, including Oklahoma! (1943), Carousel (1945), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951) and The Sound of Music (1959). When Hammerstein died in his turn, Rodgers continued to produce successful shows with various partners, while never quite again reaching that level of quality.
