Stephen Roberts is remembered essentially as a performer of concerts rather than staged opera. He studied voice and organ in London at the Royal College of Music (1969-71), and began his career with five years in the choir at Westminster Abbey (1972-77).
His solo debut was with Sir David Willcocks in Bach St Matthew Passion (1976). He worked with several notable conductors, including Richard Hickox, Simon Rattle, Riccardo Chailly, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Walter Weller, Neeme Järvi, René Jacobs and Krzysztof Penderecki.
His concert repertoire included Bach (B Minor Mass); Beethoven (Symphony no9); Elgar (Dream of Gerontius); Mahler (Symphony no8); Zemlinsky (Lyric Symphony); Vaughan Williams (Sea Symphony); Penderecki (St Luke Passion).
In Scotland he sang at the Edinburgh Festival, with the RSNO and at Haddo House.
His recordings include Elgar (Caractacus, The Apostles); Dyson (The Canterbury Pilgrims); Rubbra (Sinfonia sacra).
