Stephen Rooke studied in Manchester at the Royal Northern College of Music. Since then he has worked with most of the major British opera companies.

Roles for the Glyndebourne Festival include Ferrando in Così fan tutte, Pilade (Rossini's Ermione) and Chaplitsky in The Queen of Spades, as well as Janek in The Makropulos Case on tour in New York. For Glyndebourne Touring Opera he sang First Prisoner in Fidelio and Grimoaldo in Rodelinda.

He made his debut with ENO as Tito in La clemenza di Tito, and with the Royal Opera as St Brioche in The Merry Widow. At Opera North he sang Elemer in Arabella, and with English Touring Opera Tom Rakewell. He sang Emilio in the Early Opera Company's staging of Handel's Partenope at the Buxton Festival. Work with City of Birmingham Opera includes two Verdi roles, Fenton and Macduff.

Work with Scottish Opera includes two world premieres, creating the roles of Forsyth and Fonnegra in Friend of the People (Horne 1999) and Shelley in Monster (Beamish 2002). In Scotland he also appeared at Haddo, as Alfred in Die Fledermaus.
