Scottish Director

Born in Fife, John Leo Wilkie is a director of opera and theatre, and a dramatic coach.

He is a founding member of Opera Bohemia, and has directed productions of La bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, Madama Butterfly and Eugene Onegin for the company, all of which have premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe before touring nationally.

John trained as an actor in Scotland, and subsequently performed in both classical and contemporary roles with many theatre companies throughout the UK, as well as television work for the BBC. He undertook trainee director programmes at The National Theatre and The Kings Head Theatre, and he has trained extensively with Complicite.

​Now based in London, John continues to direct, and regularly works as an assistant and revival director at companies such as The Royal Opera House, Den Jyske Opera, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera Holland Park, Garsington Opera, OperaUpClose and Bampton Classical Opera. He also works as a dramatic coach at The Southrepps Music Festival, Goldsmiths University and iSingUK.

John's work has been supported by The National Lottery, Creative Scotland and The Arts Council England.
