Fritz Hübner Suggest updates

Fritz Hübner grew up in the GDR. From the age of 18 he studied with Friedrich Gerhard, Johan Stieler and Johanna Siebers.  He won many awards including Kammersanger from the GDR Arts Ministry in 1970, Berliner Zeitung Prize (1972) and East German National Prize in 1978.

His career began in the chorus of Köthen, Dessau and Leipzig opera houses from 1951 to 1956.  The following year he made his solo debut at the Carl Maria von Weber Theatre in Bemburg (Sparafucile Rigoletto).  As a member of the Berlin Komische Oper (1962-74) he also undertook guest appearances with the Berlin Staatsoper, when he began to sing major parts in Wagner's Ring Cycle. In 1974 he joined this company on a permanent basis.

He appeared at the Bayreuth Festival in 1979 (Hagen Götterdämmerung).  In addition to his long association with Wagnerian music dramas, he sang a variety of roles ranging from Mozart (Sarastro) and Gershwin (Porgy Porgy and Bess) to principal parts in Prince Igor (Borodin) and The Devils of Loudun (Penderecki).
