Scottish industrialist, poet and librettist.

James Smieton was a member of a family of successful jute manufacturers, and spent most of his career managing the business in partnership with his brother, John More Smieton.

Having written poetry in his youth, he also provided libretti for his brothers compositions in the popular for of Dramatic Cantata - Ariadne (1884), King Arthur (1889) and Connla (1896, perf 1900).
