Background

This popular musical comedy presented by Tom Arnold is described thus in the programme: 'Music arranged from Schubert with lyrics and additional numbers by G H Clutsam and R Tauber'. Richard Tauber had previously toured in operettas by Lehár, but he also gave recitals in which Schubert songs featured prominently.

The setting is Vienna 1826 and the plot introsuces several well-known musical and literary associates of the composer, as well as the romantic interest.
