Augustin Eugène Scribe.

Born Paris, 25 December 1791.

Died Paris, 21 Febtuary 1861.

French dramatist and librettist.

Scribe was the most successful and prolific librettist active in France in the first half of the nineteenth century. His most famous work was for the grand operas composed by Auber and Meyerbeer, as well as Donizetti and  Verdi. But he also composed many successful lighter works for Adam, Auber, Boieldieu and others.
