The Lighthouse has been one of the most successful operas premiered in recent years, and certainly the most successful to have been launched at the Edinburgh Festival, with performances taking place all over the world. The small forces required, just three singers and a chamber ensemble of twelve players, give a misleading impression, since in performance there is no sense of anything small-scale. It is powerfully dramatic, and made a great impression on its audience even at the first packed-out performance in Moray House gymnasium (a far larger auditorium than that title would imply).
