The fifth and last instalment of the wonderful collaboration between Scottish and Welsh National, and featuring the combination of Richard Armstrong, David Pountney and Maria Bjørnson, was well worth the wait, and had a shattering impact on audiences, partly through playing without an interval.

It is extremely unfortunate that projected revivals in the nineties always seemed to be cancelled due to financial stringency.  However Welsh National did revive it after a huge gap, in 2019, so hope is not lost that it may be seen in Scotland again.

 

Scottish Opera's Season - 1986/87

This season comprised Nine main stage productions plus an Opera-Go-Round staging with piano, and a most unusual Edinburgh Festival event.   The new productions were Carmen,  Iolanthe,  Intermezzo,  Flying Dutchman,   From the House of the Dead,   Billy Budd,  and  Madama Butterfly.  There were two revivals, The Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville.  The Opera-Go Round production was of Verdi's Macbeth,  The season opened at the Edinburgh Festival, with a concert including music from Gershwin's Girl Crazy.
