Lohengrin 1909Moody-Manners Opera Company

The Moody-Manners Scottish tour in the spring of 1909 was five weeks long - a week each in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee followed by two in Glasgow. They returned in October for a further fortnight in Glasgow. This second visit to Scotland's (then) third city (Dundee) contained three different Wagner operas, including the first local performance of Mastersingers. The sight-reading capabilities of the local pit band, who would have augmented the touring orchestra, must have been sorely tried. Sadly, in view of this brief glut, no Wagner opera has been given in Dundee since 1928. In Edinburgh, the sound of the massed choirs was much improved by the presence of members of the Edinburgh Grand Opera Society in several operas during the fortnight - Lohengrin, Tannhäuser and Faust.

Casts are from programmes held in local libraries, supplemented for Dundee by a review in the Dundee Advertiser.
