The company mounted its second staging of Butterfly before attempting any other Puccini work. Unlike the first, rather fragile, version, which proved not to be revivable, this production, in simple but highly evocative designs by David Wilby, would serve for regular performances over the next fifteen years. Singers who would use it to make British debuts included Felicia Weathers, Franco Bonisolli and Neil Shicoff, and excellent British singers who appeared included Elizabeth Vaughan, John Treleaven and Lorna Haywood.

This opening run included a matinee for schools in each of the two central belt cities.
