Mines of Sulphur 1965Sadler's Wells Opera

Read more about the opera Mines of Sulphur

The Mines of Sulphur was considered at its opening (24 February 1965) to be one of the most successful operas of recent times. Most of the original cast appeared on this tour, which included a solitary performance in Glasgow. Many of these performers were familiar, not only from their work with Sadler's Wells, but also from later appearances with Scottish Opera. One exception is the company's Musical Director, Colin Davis, who very rarely conducted opera in Scotland.

This production was revived several times, transferring to the Coliseum when the company moved to the big West End theatre in 1968. It also featured in the opening season of Opera North in Leeds.

Cast details are taken from a copy of the programme in the OperaScotland archive.
