Mass in E flat, D950 1993Edinburgh International Festival

Read more about the opera Mass no6 in E flat, D950

Schubert's lovely late Mass, composed in his final year, was still a rarity 25 years after Giulini had introduced it to Edinburgh audiences during the special Schubert year. In 1968 the second composer in the Festival's thematic programming was Benjamin Britten. This time it was Janáček, whose rare orchestral pieces, The Fiddler's Child and Ballad of Blanik appeared in the first part of the concert, preceded by Dvořák's dramatic Othello Overture.

Led by the wonderfully sweet-toned Dawn Upshaw, this was a highly distinguished quintet of soloists.
