Mass in E flat, D950 1968Edinburgh International Festival

Read more about the opera Mass no6 in E flat, D950

The 1968 Festival celebrated the work of two composers, Benjamin Britten and Franz Schubert. The latter had died 160 years before, while the former was very much alive and present at the Festival.

The great Italian conductor Carlo Maria Giulini, always a favourite with Festival audiences, took a leading role in both celebrations, conducting the War Requiem, with the composer as his assistant, as well as this lovely, neglected Schubert Mass. The five British soloists might not have had a huge amount to do, but this was a prestigious engagement for them all.
