At this stage of his career, Donald Runnicles had scarcely worked in his native country, and it would be several years before he struck up a relationship with the BBC SSO. Initially he did work sometimes with the RSNO, and this is rather a spectacular example, with an excellent team of soloists in Mahler's gargantuan symphony, ideal for festivals.
