Carlo Maria Giulini  was a wonderful interpreter, though in his mature years it was sometimes complained that he limited himself to a fairly narrow range of repertoire. In other words he only conducted works that he considered to be masterpieces. He returned to these a number of times. Just as he performed the Verdi Requiem in Edinburgh in 1969 and 1974, the fact that he had done the Missa Solemnis for the Beethoven bicentenary in 1970 did not prevent him doing it again.

Dramatic soprano Edda Moser was a rare visitor to Britain, and Anna Reynolds, long resident on the continent, usually only came back to the UK to work with Scottish Opera. The men worked frequently at the Festival, in the major choral masterpieces that featured prominently in the repertoire of the Edinburgh Festival Chorus.
