It was only five years since Verdi's choral masterpiece had first been given by Dundee Choral Union. It must have made a strong impression for them to return to it so soon.

If anything the team of soloists was even stronger this time, with a bass rather than a baritone at the bottom - the three lower voices were all renowned British vocalists. As before, two of them would make the magic 16 to appear in the Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music a couple of years down the line. Of the class of 1931 both men came into that category.
