A review of performance

Cast details are taken from a review of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci in the Scotsman (26 February). The reviewer said both operas 'received excellent renderings'.

"In both there seemed to be a greater vigour and fire than usual, and the performance did great credit to the conductor, Mr Henriquz de la Fuente, who has this week proved himself a most valuable acquisition to the company."

"Mascagni's opera was fortunate in a Santuzza, Miss Eleanor Felix, very greatly above the average impersonation of the character.  Vocally fine, it was a really strong dramatic conception of the wronged, passionate Italian peasant girl.

The Turiddu of Mr Edward Davies, the Alfio of Mr Frank Clarke, the Lola of Miss Dorothy Lawson Taylor, a better Lola, it may be said, than usual, and the Lucia of Miss Jean Douglas Wilson were all good, but the Santuzza was superior to them all.  It was an impersonation in which there was the note of reality."
