Read more about the opera Aïda

Commissioned to compose a grand opera to inaugurate the new opera house in Cairo, Verdi responded by creating a historical fantasy of Egypt on a tragic theme. For all its famous scenes of spectacle, such as the triumphal march, at its heart, Aïda is a web of intimate personal relationships between people caught in the crossfire of international conflict.

Opera North has presented several concert stagings in recent seasons, beginning with Wagner's Ring. Since then, in 2017, they have presented Turandot, conducted by Sir Richard Armstrong, and directed by Annabel Arden, whose work has not yet been seen in Scotland. They collaborate again on this Verdi production. The first of Opera North's concert stagings to be seen in Scotland was last year's Salome,

Rafael Rojas has appeared regularly with Opera North for many years, singing large sectors of the Italian repertoire. His only Scottish appearance came when they brought Puccini's La rondine for its Scottish premiere in Aberdeen. Alexandra Zabala came to the Edinburgh Festival a couple of years ago in the Turin staging of Macbeth. Eric Greene, here to be seen as Amonasro, is scheduled to return in the New Year for an appearance in the title role of Scottish Opera's Nixon in China.  Conductor Richard Armstrong was in charge of one run of this work during his years at Scottish Opera, but did miss some performances due a trip to London to collect the company's award for the 2003 Ring Cycle.

Please note the English titles will only be displayed on two 55 inch monitors, placed at either side of the stage.
