The reviewer states that Cav and Pag 'are the terrible twins of sordid realism', and argued that Pag fared better, 'thanks mainly to the intensity of John Myrrdin's work as Canio.
Cavalleria Rusticana nowadays almost plumbs the ddepths of bathos, although last night's show was enlivened by touches of humour from the sometimes to realistic business.
