Cast details are taken from the Scotsman review (29 March) - the name of the conductor is not given. The review gives the impression of a disappointing performance.
Of the orchestra "there were not so many sins of commission, but rather of omission, so that this exciting accompaniment sounded all too often routine and lifeless."
"Last night, Ruth Packer gave a moving performance as the heroine, but it was impossible to believe in the sincerity of her lover, or of that meddling source of homilies, Georges Germo0nt. Ivan Dickson (Alfred) has a good voice, but it was constantly spoilt by tricks of productionmore suited to a lighter style of entertainment than grand opera. Arthur Copley (Georges Germont) has a strong, clear delivery, but his acting was stiff, which made his part more unsympathetic than it really was. Ruth Packer rose to unexpected heights in the last act, in which she sang with a true and harrowing sensitivity. It is not too much to say she carried the production."
In 1949, Carl Rosa Opera toured Scotland for seven weeks, giving seven performances each week; two weeks in Edinburgh, one Aberdeen, four Glasgow. Nine different operas were performed.
