Cast details are taken from the Scotsman (8 April), whose reviewer said:- "Taken all round, it was one of the finest performances that the company has given of this odd and most unequal opera. No one can pretend it contains great music, but it has one or two stretches that redeem the general level of mediocrity, and a good performance gives the whole opera a new lease of life in quite an unexpected way."

"The Antonia of Victoria Elliott was a magnificent performance. She has a voice as true as a bell, yet admirably flexible and genuinely dramatic, and she held the attention all the time she was on the stage...there were also performances of merit throughout the rest of the opera."

"Finally, but not least important, there was some particularly efficient work on the part of the sizeable orchestra under David Ellenberg's direction. It contributed most noticeably to the general high level of the performance, and Charles Goldner's production with Hamish wilson's decor gave that feeling of a professional routine that has contrived to preserve its original freshness."
