It was certainly an indicarion of the scale of their ambition that Edinburgh Grand under the direction of Richard Telfer should have dusted down Meyerbeer's grand opera, not seen in Scotland since the First World War. The Usher Hall stage could accommodate the choral forces required, though the acting was strictly limited, in a semi-staged format.

Two of the most important roles - the high-flying tenor hero Raoul and his lugubrious servant Marcel - were entrusted to two Scottish professionals returning from London. Kenneth Macdonald and David Ward both gained useful experience over several seasons singing major roles with amateur groups in Dundee and Edinburgh. And Michael Moores was able to conduct a piece that was most unlikely to come his way at Sadler's Wells.
