Traviata 1946Carl Rosa Opera Company

Read more about the opera Traviata

As yet, no programmes have been located for Traviata on this tour. However, the Scotsman review (20 March) identifies principals and adds some colour.

"Joan Hammond sang the exacting role of Violetta, and was at all times pleasing - sometimes quite magnificent."

"Robert Sydney's Alfred was on the light side vocally to match Miss Hammond, or indeed to fill the part at all as we are accustomed to hear it. But his lightness had visual advantages, and once his flexible tenor voice, as it were, been focussed in relation to his surroundings, the effect was far from unpleasant. There was obviously a good deal of skill in his handling of the part.

Otakar Kraus, saddled with what must be one of the most thankless parts in all opera, Alfred's Father, made an outstanding success of  it. The smaller parts were also capably filled, and Vilem Tausky conducted with skill and precision."
