Fledermaus 1960Sadler's Wells Opera

Read more about the opera Fledermaus

1958 was the year in which Sadler's Wells had launched its enormously successful Merry Widow production. The following saw another Viennese favourite as follow-up. Die Fledermaus had been a popular piece during the war, but they had not done it since. In 1960 it was taken round Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, with that last city seeing it again in the spring of 1961.

Like Merry Widow, this production featured in a successful disc of highlights issued soon after. John Heddle Nash (ill on the Glasgow first night) and Anna Pollak were the only two of this cast to feature in the recording. Details of this cast are from the review in the Glasgow Herald of 18 March.
