Eugene Onegin 1957Sadler's Wells Opera

Read more about the opera Eugene Onegin

During his final years working with Scottish Opera, Eugene Onegin was clearly one of Alexander Gibson's favourite pieces, conducted in several revivals of the memorably detailed and intimate staging by David Pountney. It is easy to forget that until then the work had not been frequently given in Scotland. This single performance is the only instance of its being toured here by any national company between the demise of Moody-Manners and the Glyndebourne visit of 1971.

Brief cast details are from the Glasgow Herald review. The success of the party and ballroom is particularly marked, with the 'crowded stage scenes Sadler's Wells handle so brilliantly'. Even this early in his experience of the work, Alexander Gibson clearly paced the climaxes of the duel scene and closing duet highly effectively.
