Mastersingers of Nuremberg 1921Carl Rosa Opera Company

Read more about the opera Meistersinger von Nürnberg

This two week season by Carl Rosa at the Edinburgh Lyceum began on Monday 11 April 1921, and had the following programme:

First week: Mon tbc; Tue tbc; Wed Mastersingers; Thu Lohengrin; Fri Madam Butterfly; Sat mat Carmen; Sat eve Trovatore.

Second week: Mon Tales of Hoffmann; Tue Tannhäuser; Wed Faust; Thur Valkyrie; Fri Cav & Pag; Sat mat David Garrick; Sat eve Maritana.

Mastersingers had not been a prominent feature of the Rosa repertoire, but many of these singers go on to sing a good number of Wagner roles. Charles Webber, having worked at several German houses, including Bayreuth, was an excellent conductor. However, even allowing for intervals shorter than we are used to nowadays, a 7.00 start indicates the opera was subjected to fairly substantial cuts.

Cast details for this Wednesday evening performance and for the following night's Lohengrin, are from the OperaScotland copy of that programme. From the following week, we also have a programme for the Monday and tuesday - Hoffmann and Tannhäuser. All four works are conducted by Webber.
