Tannhäuser 1921O'Mara Grand Opera Company

Read more about the opera Tannhäuser

The O'Mara company was now celebrating its tenth year of touring since the noted tenor had left Moody-Manners to form his own company. This two week visit, commencing 5 September 1921 at the Theatre Royal, was perhaps unusual for this company, in that there was no work by Puccini, but a rarity by Mozart, The Seraglio, instead. The rest of the week was fairly standard, with five frequently performed repertoire pieces plus Tristan.

The repertoire for the visit was:

Week commencing 5 September: Mon Tannhäuser; Tue Seraglio; Wed Maritana; Thu Trovatore; Fri Tristan; Sat mat Faust and Sat eve Carmen.

Week commencing 12 September: Mon Rigoletto; Tue The Jewess; Wed Tannhäuser; Thu Lily of Killarney; Fri Samson and Delilah; Sat mat Carmen; Sat eve Bo Girl.

The timings of the performance are given as 50 mins for the first act, 55 for the second and 40 for the third, with two ten minute intervals, giving a total durartion of 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Cast details are from a programme for Monday 5 and Tuesday 6 Sep in the Mitchell Library.
