This production can be seen as marking the start of Tayside Opera's real struggle for survival, from which it has yet to emerge. The resources were much reduced compared with recent years, with chorus members apparently not being replaced as they retired. The use of the Bonar Hall, a modern box completely lacking in atmosphere, did not help. A very wide but shallow stage, on a low platform, made any staging difficult, and set and props were kept to a minimum.

In spite of the difficulties, this wonderful work still projected in an enjoyable manner. Alison McDonald, who had been a wonderfully versatile soprano, here made her final appearance with the company. The new tenor, John Carlo Bellottis, had several years experience with the chorus of Scottish Opera, and had a vocally successful attempt at this peach of a role.

Further details to be confirmed.
