Creation 1958Dundee Amateur Choral Union

Read more about the opera Creation

In 1908, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Dundee choir's foundation, the Choral Union performed The Creation. For the centenary, the same work was programmed, and the event was, unusually, included in the SNO's own concert season. An exalted trio of soloists was also recruited. This was the last concert at which the term 'Amateur' was included. For the two autumn concerts and for the climax of the centenary season the following spring (the Verdi Requiem), the concerts were presented by Dundee Choral Union.

The conductor, Hungarian Béla de Csillery, spent several seasons conducting in Dundee, while teaching at Glenalmond College in Perthshire. He then moved south, where he devoted much of his subsequent career to the development of musical education in the county of Kent.
