The final revival of David Pountney’s popular and successful staging still worked well, though the visual side looked a bit tired. Russell Smythe was a late replacement for the run, but could take advantage of the fact that early in his career with Welsh National he had followed Thomas Allen in the excellent Andrei Serban staging.
