Gavin Bryars first worked on music to accompany the harrowing Euripides drama in 1982, but it quickly expanded into a full operatic version, with final revisions in 1995.

This concert performance, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, was part of Fairest Isle, an extensive (year-long) series on British Music and Culture.
