Italiana in Algeri 1838Mr Mitchell's Italian Opera Buffa Company

Read more about the opera Italian Girl in Algiers

The Italian Opera Buffa Company, from London and under the management of Mr Mitchell, came to Edinburgh to give eight evenings of opera spread over two weeks. The initial announcement listed a number of works from the which the repertoire would be selected. This included several that are familiar to us today - Rossini's Italian Girl, Mozart's Figaro, Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore and Bellini's Sonnambula. Some of the proposed programme items are considerably less familiar now - even the two other Donizetti pieces were Betly and Torquato Tasso, while the list also included what are real rarities nowadays, Un' avventura di Scaramuccia by Luigi Ricci, Elisa e Claudio by Mercadante and Nina by Coppola. In the event, the first six nights of the eight were: Tue 8 May Italiana and Betly; Thu 10 May Scaramuccia; Fri 11 May L'elisir; Sat 12 May repeat of Italiana and Betly; Mon 14 May repeat of Scaramuccia; Wed 16 May Figaro. The last two programmes are as yet unconfirmed. The performances of The Italian Girl were followed by Rossini's William Tell overture, and then Donizetti's sparkling little one-acter Betly. The cast shown for Italiana is as advertised in the Caledonian Mercury for Tuesday 8 May.
