Rehearsal for Breathe freely recording 2014Various

Read more about the opera Breathe Freely

Rehearsals and the recording of Julian Wagstaff's chamber opera Breathe Freely took place at Scottish Opera's production studios at Edington Street. in Glasgow.  The occasion was remarkable as it was the first occasion for well over ten years that a studio recording of an opera had been made in Scotland.

The producer, Calum Malcolm, is a well-known Scottish record producer with a remarkable list of credits across many genres. The singers were Laura Margaret Smith (mezzo-soprano), Paul Curievici (tenor) and Phil Gault (baritone).

At eleven o'clock, the singers gathered with Scottish Opera Head of Music, Derek Clark, to run through the score with the composer.  Silviya Mihaylova was the repetiteur.  In the afternoon, the musicians Mark Bailey (cello), Andrew Johnston (piano) and Pete Furniss (clarinet) worked with the company.

Iain and Stephen of OperaScotland were there, Iain taking the images.

The recording took place on the following day at Edington Street
