Even before the arrival on the scene of Joan Sutherland, Australia was already a fertile source of excellent sopranos for the Covent Garden and Sadler's Wells companies - Sylvia Fisher and Rosina Raisbeck both spent several seasons at the Royal Opera House. The baritone John Cameron was another recent arrival taking major roles - he had sung Germont in La traviata the previous week. In those days even Wagner was generally sung in English.
