Only five seasons had elapsed since the students of the RSAMD had last tackled Britten's tricky intimate tragedy.  Usually a dozen or so years would be expected to go by.  However the availability of such a hugely promising talent as Arbroath mezzo Karen Cargill makes the decision easy to explain.

There were several other good prospects, including Elizabeth Atherton.  The experienced mezzo Cynthia Buchan could also be relied on to bring a fresh touch to the direction.
