Huguenots 1905Moody-Manners Opera Company

Meyerbeer's operas were extremely popular in the late nineteenth century, but have struggled to stay in the repertoire since then.

Where Carl Rosa had presented several of them over the years, this is the only one to have been tried by Moody-Manners.  They clearly threw everything at it - the advertising promised a company of 118, including a chorus of 55 voices, full corps de ballet and a band of thirty first-class musicians travelling with the company to augment the local theatre orchestra.  By performing it on Thursday evening those local players had a bit more rehearsal time to get to grips with an unfamiliar score.

The cast for 19 October is from a programme in the Mitchell Library collection.
