Read more about the opera Ernani

Ernani, once among the most popular of Verdi's operas, fell on hard times during the twentieth century, and this was a very rare revival. The company even created a new translation for the purpose.

Several of the performers, including the Ernani himself, John Robertson, would be back on the King's stage the following month, raising the roof in the first performances of Otello featuring the Scottish Opera Chorus.

The popular work in the Grand's repertoire this week was another Verdi piece, Aïda.

Cast details for Aïda and Ernani are from a copy of the programme in the OperaScotland collection.
